Today I want to tell you about another KCRW show called Here Be Monsters.

It's a podcast about Fear and the Unknown. I really loved one of their recent

episodes called Pray of Worms, so I wanted to play you my favorite parts from it. The episode

is a collection of the different ways that people see the human body and the

metaphors they use to understand it.

Here's the excerpt. I'm going to. The body is a machine.

I'm the daughter of a mechanic and so a lot of my time growing up was spent with him learning and holding the flashlight and with my own little tool set.

He would never describe himself as an intellectual, but he is certainly one of the smartest people I know.

Understanding his thought process and his relationship with an engine or a pump or something like that has really

helped me as a doctor understand the human body.

The machines require affection, they require maintenance and they will

give you signals when there's something wrong.

Having this understanding of the body as an electrical circuit,

the way that our nerves function, or the body as a pump and

tubing with our heart and blood vessels, or the body as a series of levers and hydraulics and and pulleys with our ligaments and

tendons and muscles and bones and the the sort of hydrostatic pressure that inflates us, that, you know, makes us more than a little

pile of mush on the ground.
