In December 2019, Detective Graff obtained the vial containing extracted DNA from the sperm fraction of the tampon that was recovered from Lisa.

Samples from two areas of the tampon had been tested and consistent male DNA obtained.

On December 19th, Detective Graff sent the vial to gene-by-gene to prepare a SNIP profile.

Quote from his report, as a result of the

genetic testing and access to family tree DNA.com, I was able to determine that the origins of

the suspect DNA profile was 97% from the continent of Africa and 3% from Europe. Also, using the

information provided, I was able to obtain investigative

leads involving possible relatives of the suspect DNA profile."

So, sure enough, the semen sample donor was a black male, and Detective Groff was determined

to figure out who he was.

The SNIP profile was entered into family tree DNA and Jedmatch.

The results weren't stellar.

The top DNA relatives shared 98 centum organs with the unknown suspect.

There were quite a few lower-level relatives, though, who helped Detective Graff build

family trees.

And he told me he built a lot of trees, as many as 10 to 15. Detective Graf started

contacting people and requesting reference test samples to try to narrow down the trees.

They referenced tested a total of five people, all of whom were happy to cooperate.

Slowly but surely, this provided direction into the genealogy analysis.

And then they referenced tested a woman who turned out to be about a second cousin-level relative of the suspects.

Her mother tested as a third cousin once removed, and their family tree had a branch located in Wisconsin.

Detective Graf turned to people on this tree who were possible candidates to be the suspect.
