A grisly raw-boned man stoop-shouldered, loose and leathery.

His body was shrunk and shriveled, dark skin, dark hair looking woestruck.

His whole body worked slowly, creakingly, as if wanted oiling.

He was not a pretty man, nor an ugly one by any means, but a homely one.

I doubt I need to tell you who I'm talking about here. Oh, I'm reading from one of the earliest and most controversial examinations of Abraham Lincoln's life.

It's 1883 and you are treated to a rich site.

You enter a two-story home in a Midwestern city surrounded by a white picket fence.

You can enter to see walls full of pictures, furniture, clothing, trinkets, badges, autograph letters,

pins, medals, envelopes, all celebrating one man.

For some, it was the greatest collection of memorabilia of any man in the world.

For others, it was a junk shop.

This was Lincoln's home, which he departed in 1861 to become the 16th President of the

United States.

He rented it out, as the Lincoln family expected to be back in four or eight years.
