Mom, I can't find my cleats.

Jack called from the mudroom.

Well, where did you leave them?

Laura replied in a normal voice, for she was just steps away in the kitchen.

The children had an acclimated to their smaller living situation.

They bellowed as if they were in the old house, where we weren't always up each other's

asses.

Michael often thought but did not say.

I left them right there, Jack said, stabbing a finger at his designated cubbyhole.
