Chapter 14

Two days later, and I was back at it, down in the basement a new scouring tool in hand,

and a spray bottle of vinegar and water in the other.

It was a Thursday.

It was cool and gray and windy.

The basement felt as dreary as ever, if not more so.

I began my work on the wall behind Lilla's bed and sprayed three strips of paper with

a removal solution.

The scraper allowed me to peel back a top corner of the paper with relative ease.

Here goes, I thought, expecting to have to struggle to get the paper free of the wall.

To my surprise, it came down in just a few easy sheets, revealing a gray wall behind it.

A little blue and backing clung to the dull paint, but not much.

I worked my way from left to right.

The second sheet of paper also came down with little trouble.
