Caesar Young, one of the wealthiest racing men in the United

States, and the man who was renowned 10 years ago as an amateur athletic champion, was shot

to death this morning in a cab within a short distance of the American Line pier from which he was

to sail. Nan Patterson, one of the original Flor Pier from which he was to sail.

Nan Patterson, one of the original Floridora sextet for whom Young had an overpowering infatuation,

was with him in the cab when he was shot.

She was detained by the police at the Leonard Street Station.

The police say that they found Young lying with his head in the woman's lap and the revolver in his coat pocket on the right side. They cannot understand

how he could have put the pistol there after shooting himself in the left breast as he was

shot. Young was going to Europe with his wife to escape the Patterson

Woman. For nearly two years she had been the source of much unhappiness in the

Young family and her demands on Young had finally reached the stage when Mrs. Young

saw no way to tear him from the woman except by taking him across the sea.

The Patterson woman was held in $1,000 bail at the coroner's office as a witness.

Abraham Levy, her counselor, is attempting to get bail.

The woman in a statement to the coroner said she met Young in California, again in Chicago,

and came here with Young five weeks ago from the latter city. The woman, in her statement,

said she heard a muffled report and did not see the revolver and believed Young shot

himself while the revolver was in his coat pocket.
