Summary

Scientists have never been able to adequately explain where lightning comes from. Now the first detailed observations of its emergence inside a cloud have exposed how electric fields grow strong enough to create bolts. Jeff and Anthony step through how scientists have been able to record the spark of lightning. Then, Anthony starts his own lightning - a lightning round of headlines! Paralyzing rats, happiness from marriage, celebrity worship, sleeping in space, and more!

You can't just rubber egg-a-no on anything. This is we have concerns. Hi Jeff Kanata.

0:21.0

I'm Anthony Carvoney. Hello concerned citizens. Anthony. Lightning. Very, very frightening me.

0:32.6

Is it frightening me? Galileo. Galileo. Are you, when you were a kid did it,

0:38.2

right? Did it frighten you? One of those kids were afraid of lightning or did it like excite

0:41.8

you and thrill you? I loved it. I loved it. And there was a certain part of me that was convinced

0:46.9

that if I got struck by it, I would get super speed. Super speed specifically because of the flash.

0:52.2

Because of the flash. Lightning is fast and so super speed. Or maybe like electric powers of

0:58.2

some kind. Yeah, Electro. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I always thought, I grew up in California

1:05.9

in the Bay Area. Thunderstorms, very rare. We got fog. That's what we got. We got fog and sunshine.

1:14.8

Yeah. That was the two states. Very, very rarely did we get thunder and lightning. So anytime I

1:20.3

experienced thunder and lightning, it was, it just seems like magic. It seems incredible. And so I

1:27.7

was very dazzled by it. And now that I'm in areas where I get it more often, I still have that

1:34.1

residual feeling of excitement when I see lightning in the sky. I love a thunderstorm. I really do.

1:40.1

Yeah. I'm one of the few people were like, if there's a thunderstorm going on when I'm in a plane,

1:46.2

I actually dig in. Yeah. There's no fear of like, oh my God, if the plane's going to get struck by

1:52.1

lightning, yeah. Well, we got a story this week about lightning. I don't think we've ever really

1:58.3

talked on the show in the many years we've done it about lightning specifically. Well, we try to stay

2:03.0

away from anything controversial. It's true. It's true. That third rail of science. Yeah.

2:09.9

The lightning. Listen, it's the lightning truth. There's, you know what I mean?

2:16.5

We don't want to attract them here. They always try to convince you that there's no such thing as

2:22.2

lightning. It's all it's all a hoax. You know what? I bet if we googled right now, you could find

2:30.5

somebody trying to convince people that lightning is a hoax. Look, if you did, I bet it would
