How this ocean right here and a cold dip in it led me to an epiphany four years in the making.

0:07.0

So let's back up before the cold dip in the epiphany.

0:10.0

So for four years I have been intrigued by this idea of 3D printing houses and there are a few of them out there in the world if you live in Austin you can actually go see some of them

0:19.8

They've always thought that this was an incredible use of technology an incredible way to move forward and help solve the affordable housing crisis.

0:28.0

Now, I haven't 3D printed even the tiniest figure, and I know nothing about the mechanics of 3D printing but I believe in the technology of it.

0:36.0

So that idea has always sat in my brain for years and years and years and years.

0:41.0

And so that idea is sat in my brain and I always thought I want to I want to

0:45.1

3D print homes. I want a 3D print homes. Like we should be using this

0:48.7

technology. But I never did anything with it. And then a couple weeks before that cold dip I was

0:53.9

watching a 60 minute segment and it was with the founder of one of the 3D

0:58.2

printing companies icon and he was sitting there and he was talking about how they do 3D printing and this was awesome press for him and awesome press for this idea of 3D printing houses in general.

1:08.8

He's talking all about it and he says something like if I was just 3D printing homes for rich people I would

1:15.5

quit today but if I was just 3D printing homes for low-income housing and it's

1:21.5

5% margins our company would be broke. And I have to find the

1:26.2

middle ground. And I was like, okay, that's like intriguing, interesting. He's saying he doesn't

1:32.3

want to do it purely for profit. he wants to help solve the affordable housing crisis, but he also needs to make money like any business.

1:38.0

And that thought kind of passed out of my head, and I got back from Iran and it was winter here at the beach and I thought I'm going to go jump in that ocean.

1:46.8

So I run in I jump in the ocean it's cold at first but as soon I started floating on my back

1:51.1

just letting my mind wander and in that moment I thought

1:56.3

uh-huh I've got it I figured out how we can meet in the middle just like that founder of ICON said and I came up with the idea of how high-end hospitality is going to solve the affordable housing crisis through the 3D printing of hotels and the 3D printing of

2:14.8

affordable housing in those same communities and it was like a light bulb went off

2:18.7

in my head and thought this is what you want to do this is what you're made for and this is what you should be doing in life.
