Hey ladies, today we're going to talk about lichen sclerosis.

Lichen sclerosis is a skin condition of the vulva and perineal area.

And why are we talking about this?

We're talking about this because lichen sclerosis is actually more common

than people think it is and can be a pretty debilitating skin condition.

So I wanted to bring it up because maybe you have it,

maybe you have somebody who has it in your family or friends,

and it can be a main reason that women have uncomfortable sex

or what we call dysperonia pain with sex as they get older.

And it is, they have some theories about why it happens, but the exact cause of lichen sclerosis

remains unknown. Now men can have lichen sclerosis too, not just women, but for the purpose of

about women. But keep in mind, it can happen to men and mostly uncircumcised men. Well, it can have

lichen sclerosis. So it's a chronic inflammatory and scarring disease of the skin of unknown

etiology, meaning there's some theories about why lichen sclerosis happens,

but they don't exactly know why it happens. There's some correlations with other health

conditions that we'll get into, meaning it's more common in some people than it is in other people,

but they don't know exactly what causes lichenschlorosis. It has something to do with low estrogen status because the two groups of women that get lichen sclerosis

are pre-puberal and then postmenopausal.

So having regular periods in the younger years of your life is actually protective against lichen sclerosis.

So the most common site of involvement for lichen sclerosis

is the anogenital region. Male patients will see white penile lesions or plaques or itchiness or painful
