Here are some of today's top headlines from the Los Angeles Times.

Yesterday, President Trump unveiled sweeping new tariffs in a Rose Garden speech at the White

House. L.A. Times reporters inform us that the U.S. will now slap a 10% baseline tariff on all

imported goods. Countries that tax American products are getting hit hard, too. China faces a 44% tariff. The European Union gets 20%

and India 26%. Trump calls this Liberation Day for the American industry and says this move

will bring back manufacturing jobs to the U.S. However, experts warn it might lead to a global trade war and even a recession.

For now, some countries like Canada and Mexico appear to have escaped the strictest penalties.

This is one of the biggest trade shifts since World War II, and Americans could possibly

see higher prices on imported goods. Former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services,

Xavier Bacera, just announced he's running for California governor in 2026.

Seema-Meda reports he's joining a crowded field of Democrats, including Lieutenant Governor

Aleni Kunalakis and former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaragosa.

The big question is whether former Vice President Kamala Harris will jump in, which could shake up the race.

Bacera has held public office for 35 years and says his experience fighting Trump and managing disasters like COVID-19

make him the right choice to lead our state through its ongoing challenges.

His deep connection to California, along with his progressive credentials,

could make this a fierce race.

State Farm General wants to raise rates again. Lawrence Darmiento reports that the state's largest home provider is asking California

regulators for a massive 39% increase on personal liability umbrella insurance.

This adds extra coverage for things like slip and fall accidents, property damage, and even libel claims.
