What ever happened to liberalism?

Once upon a time, liberals stood for free speech. Once upon a time, liberals demanded toleration for ideas and principles that ran contrary to the mainstream consensus.

Once upon a time, liberals were countercultural. Once upon a time, liberals embraced the common men, the working men, and men who were,

well, men. Once upon a time, liberals cared for the poor, the helpless, the marginalized, and the

unloved. Once upon a time, liberals were progressive reformers. Once upon a time, liberals fought for free inquiry and scientific

integrity. Once upon a time, liberals were skeptical of the establishment powers and

principalities. Once upon a time, liberals were committed to freedom and to all its liberal values of life,

liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, of peace, love, and civility.

Today, the political left stands in opposition to all these things.

Once upon a time, liberals were actually liberal. Alas, no longer.

Instead, they become noisy advocates for censorship and coercion, for bi-coastal urban elitism for big government and centralized power,

they have embarked on a course of imprecatory stigmatization of any and all opposing worldviews. They are determined to impose a toxic brand of ideological manipulation on the entire cultural apparatus, from media to science,

from government to entertainment, from education to medicine, from Wall Street to Main Street,

from what we eat and what we drink to what we drive, and what we think.

They deem anything and everything that deigns to question their new illiberal orthodoxy as a basket of deplorable ignorance, disinformation,

conspiracy, and woe but tied a threat to democracy. Garbage. All garbage. What they care about most

are bizarre Freudian notions of self-identification and self-infatuation or perverse Keynesian

...
