Summary

Libby Ward joins The Mom Room this week to talk all about Honest Motherhood, which is coincidentally the title of her new book! Holding it all together all the time is unrealistic for mothers, yet society expects them to be the epitome of perfection. Libby shares her parenthood journey with Renee as they connect over shifting belief systems, partner dynamics, therapy, boundaries and how we have to be honest about our struggles so that we can figure out where to go. Please enjoy listening to Libby’s powerful story of losing her mind and finding herself, and check out her book linked below!

Libby, welcome back.

0:16.2

Hi, thanks for having me.

0:18.1

I just finished a CrossFit class and I was like, I have a recording. I have to go right away. Oh, is somebody entering the chat? It's not a ghost. It's my cat opening the door. That was so spooky. I know. It's always, it happens at least once every two weeks. Just bye, Daisy. Have a nice way. Aw. I didn't know that you had a cat. Yeah, I do. She's just, I call her the depression cat because she just like meows all day, even though she has the best life ever. And she just, like, lies on the sidewalk. She wants to be involved. She needs everyone to pet her because we just neglect her and just meows all the time. I'm like, calm down. Because I'm not a cat person.

0:54.3

I'm not a cat person.

0:55.1

I'm a dog person, but I don't have the capacity for a dog. So I have to have a cat. Oh, come over to my house for one minute. Okay. You will scratch your eyeballs out. But they're so cute. That's the problem. Yeah. Anyways, I'm all sweaty. I just came from the gym, but I was like, I'm making time for both because I have a bad habit of just like piling work on. And I love working and I'm obsessed with it. But then everything else just doesn't get prioritized. So I was like, I'm just going to record sweaty. I like I am. I like it. Well, I am wearing a full track suit. I'm like, I could put real pants on,

1:29.1

but why would I make myself uncomfortable unnecessarily? So I'm just showing up as it is for

1:35.5

whatever conversation we end up having. I love it. Okay, the first thing I want to talk about

1:40.9

with regard to your book, because you were on not too long ago. And I was like,

1:44.5

okay, once the book is close to coming out, then we'll have you back on and talk all things about

1:49.7

the book. Yeah. So it's on my coffee table still. It's like a decor piece. And I'm like halfway through.

1:56.5

It's a decor piece in my living room. And Milo always looks at the cover and goes, Mommy, that's you. And I was like, oh, that's nice. Yeah. That's nice. So it's called honest

2:06.7

motherhood. And then it says losing your mind and finding yourself. Where in your motherhood

2:14.1

journey were you like, I am not okay. Like, this is not normal.

2:18.6

So I would say the first time I was honest with myself about the fact that I was not

2:25.0

mentally well and that I couldn't actually do all the things that I was expecting

2:29.0

myself to do was six months postpartum after my second born.

2:33.1

So my firstborn happened, you know, there was some

2:36.1

drama in the beginning with her being hospitalized, but after that it was smooth sailing, like she

2:40.3

breastfed. She slept not through the night, but she slept four hour chunks. I could like

2:44.7

pretty much handle the things. I felt like I was nailing it because, you know, like I could make

2:49.2

the homemade puread food.
