Summary

In July of 1806, Captain Meriwether Lewis and three of his companions had a violent confrontation with the Blackfeet, resulting in at least one dead warrior. This encounter would lead to strained relations between the United States and the Blackfeet Confederacy and result in decades of bloodshed. But is the official story – as told by the Corps of Discovery – truly what occurred? The Blackfeet don’t think so! Also discussed is the re-crossing of the Bitterroot Mountains, the splitting up of command, and the curious pronunciation of the Marias River. Shucking a flintlockeded pistol the captain gave chase,

and just kept on a running. Now the previous day, Lewis and the others, Drewer, Joseph and Rubin,

had come in contact with a small party of eight blackfeet. Teenagers mostly, and despite some initial tension,

the two parties agreed to a friendly smoke. Hell, they even decided to camp out together.

As soon as he turned his back,

They too caught up with one of the warriors, and during the ensuing scuffle, Rubin plunged

As all this was going on, the remaining Blackfeet had circled back and were making
