As we approach the great solemnity of Pentecost, I've been thinking a lot about

how we as Catholics describe this event as the descent of the Holy Spirit.

We talk about the Holy Spirit descending upon Mary and the apostles at Pentecost.

I think that's fascinating because when we think about the other persons of the Trinity,

we don't think about that as much.

We think about Jesus rising from the dead.

Jesus ascending into heaven.

We think about God the Father exalted and sitting on high in heaven.

But when we think about the Holy Spirit, many times you see the idea of the Holy Spirit

descending, whether it's at Jesus's baptism, at the Jordan River. Remember, the heaven's open,

and the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove. Or we can think about even prefigurings of the Holy Spirit's

coming, like the cloud that descends upon Mount Sinai. Or we can see in Jesus' own life right there at the

Transfiguration. You have the Father's voice. We have the Son and the Spirit descending in the form

of a cloud. That's what the cloud overshadowing the Mount of Transfiguration is pointing to. The Holy

Spirit. But you think about it, the Annunciation. The Holy Spirit overshadows Mary, and she conceives of the Christ child.

And then, of course, at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends upon Mary and the apostles with the forms of the tongues of fire over them.

So there's a lot here with this idea of the Holy Spirit descending.

And I think that's fascinating for our own spiritual lives.
