New York Attorney General Letitia James pleaded not guilty today in federal court in Norfolk, Virginia,

to felony charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution.

Prosecutors alleged she misrepresented a rental property's purpose as a second home

to secure a lower mortgage rate and save almost 19 grand on taxes.

But James calls the charges baseless, saying relatives live in the home and she's never collected rent.

The judge set a trial date for January 26th.

James' legal team wants the indictment thrown out and is challenging

the authority of the prosecutor, Lindsay Halligan. She's the former personal attorney of President

Donald Trump, who also brought an indictment to former FBI director James Comey. CNN's Caitlin

Paulant says more. And then the other thing is about Lindsay Halligan contacting a journalist over the messaging

app signal.

One of the things there that James's team wants is they want an order from the court saying

that the prosecutors around this, including Lindsay Halligan herself, should not be allowed

to make what are called extrajudicial statements.

They shouldn't be allowed to talk to the media.

And if they do, they should have to record how much they're talking.

1.4 million civilian federal workers are set to miss their first full paycheck today
