Well, the threat to federal food subsidies appears to be over, but it may have all been worth it so that you could hear this story.

Well, gentlemen, as you know, eight Democrats defected and made it possible to stop the so-called government shutdown.

And the big threat that was being waived over the last several weeks was to the

supplemental nutritional assistance program previously known as food stamps.

But there's a story in the New York Times that the Times meant for me to

understand in one way, Stephen Green, but I understood it in a different way. And this story is

that among the Blackfeet Nation of Western Montana, so this is a Native American tribe in

Western Montana, they decided to step in during the

threat to the SNAP funding because one in four Native Americans and Alaskan tribe members are

actually in the SNAP program. They stepped up and decided that they would harvest a few of their bison from

their herd. They have about 600 bison in this herd, and they normally harvest four bison every

month to take care of the elderly, or as they refer to them, their elders in the tribe or the nation.

And they harvested 18 of this herd of 600 bison steve, and they fed some 2,300 families

with about 3,000 pounds of hamburger meat.

And then there were some other supplies like spam and milk and

fruit and vegetables that they included with these deliveries and and that

you didn't have to be on snap in order to receive these you just had to want them

or need them Stephen Green maybe it's just me but this act of self-reliance on the part of the Blackfeet nation

stirs my heart.

Mine too.

And you know what, that's the real America.
