So today, we're going to talk about a question about tariffs.

If Trump's tariffs are so bad, why do other countries have tariffs?

This question came in repeatedly over the weekend, mainly because high-profile Trump administration people asked it rhetorically.

This time, we're not just going to answer the question.

We're going to go over some things that help stop you from buying rhetoric even your mom warned you about.

We'll go through it step by step in hopes of showing that mommy was right.

I'm just going to start by asking a question, your mom probably asked you at some point.

If all your friends, I don't even have to finish it, do I?

You know this has something to do with your friends jumping off a bridge.

If tariffs are so bad, why do other countries have them?

If having a per capita GDP under $25,000 is so bad, why do 100 countries have that?

If having a GDP under 20 trillion is so bad, why does every country except the US have that?

Other countries doing something on a much more limited basis than Trump is doing doesn't justify Trump doing it.

Your mom told you this was a bad argument when you were a child.

And right now, you're saying, but that's not right.

The U.S. economy is different than all those other countries. Exactly.

That's the whole point. Not just, are you calling your mother dumb by repeating this? You're

comparing apples to oranges. In most cases, you're really comparing apples to shoelaces

because the economies are that different. Let me ask you this. Is there another

economy in the entire world that you believe could fight a trade war with the rest of the entire

world at once and when? If you support Trump's tariffs, the answer has to be no. Because
