Well, howdy there, Internet people, it's Bell again.

So today, we're going to talk about Trump losing his first real spat with the GOP.

Before Trump even entered office, he started a showdown with the Senate over who was going to be majority leader.

He didn't get his way when Thune was elected. But there's a big

difference between the results of a ballot like that and a very public nomination showdown.

Well, Trump started one of those as well. He's lost that too. His pick for Attorney General

has been withdrawn. This tells us a lot. First, it shows

us that there are at least a handful of Republicans in both the House and the Senate that

won't go along with whatever Trump demands. He didn't have the votes to get his nominee

through. That's the obvious part.

But it also tells us something else.

Trump, as part of his demands for the new Senate Majority Leader, said, quote,

Any Republican Senator seeking the coveted leadership position in the United States Senate must agree to recess appointments

in the Senate, without which we will not be able to get people confirmed in a timely manner.

Trump's purpose in demanding recess appointments was to circumvent the Senate's constitutional obligation

to provide advice and consent and to avoid having tough votes for the nominees. What do recent events

tell us? There were apparently enough GOP votes to throw one of Trump's nominees off track.

Okay, fine, that happens. And sometimes it's just a personal thing. But it would also seem to

indicate that the recess appointment plan is in doubt as well. Otherwise, Trump just would have got the nomination through that way.

This tells us that there are definitely a few Republicans in both the House and the Senate

that either take the Constitution seriously or had other political reasons for their early

opposition to Trump in a very public showdown.
