Well howdy there, Internet people. It's Bell again.

So today, we're going to talk about Trump having a hard time trying to save the Save Act.

Trump has become bizarrely fixated on the Save Act.

But as we've talked about, almost every time he mentions it, he talks about the partisan

benefits of the bill, not the election security claims that he keeps trying to push on his base.

Well, Trump met with senators to try to push it, and the senators are having a hard time finding some way to appease Trump.

As we talked about before, Trump wants them to end the filibuster. But Thune seems unlikely to go that route.

And even if he does, he probably still wouldn't have enough votes, because there are some Republicans

opposed to the bill. Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky,

Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Tom Tillis of North Carolina have all already voted

against the Save Act. The next move is to try to use the budget

reconciliation process. However, the Senate parliamentarian has already shot it down once, because it's

wildly outside the rules and would get bird bathed. Trump wants to fire the parliamentarian,

but Thune seems opposed. Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana is still pinning his hopes on that,

saying, quote, just because the parliamentarian says no, you have to keep taking her feedback and massaging.

And there are some really big legal brains out there in the world that can help us.

He thinks the bill can be rewritten to fit within the bird rule. It really can't. The bird rule was put in place specifically

to prevent this exact type of non-budgetary item being dumped into a budget reconciliation process.

I'm not sure there's a legal mind out there that can massage the act into something that would clear the

bird rule and remotely resemble what Trump wants. And every time Trump talks about it, he makes it

clear that it's a major policy change, not a budget one. Another idea being tossed about is to attach the SAVE Act

to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, FISA. That's the intelligence authorization
