Summary

What can be expected from Ohio State's defense in 2023? The Buckeyes improved from 59th to 14th in the country in total defense during Jim Knowles' first season as coordinator in 2022. However, OSU's defense cost the team dearly in consecutive losses to close out the season against Michigan and Georgia. In addition to it being his first year in Columbus, Knowles inherited a lack of veteran talent on the defense. We know this because only one player was drafted off the Buckeyes' 2022 defense ... and that was third-round pick Zach Harrison. That was it. This season should be different in a good way for Ohio State. Not only is it the second year of the Knowles' system, but the most talented players on the defense appear ready to come of age. There are a lot of third-year and second-year players who are extremely talented on the defensive side of the ball. Let's take a close look at all three levels of the Buckeyes' defense in 2023 and what reasonable expectations are for this group. That is coming your way on the Monday 5ish as Dave Biddle flies solo. Good morning, Bucknoters. Welcome to the Bucknuts Morning 5 here on

0:29.9

Monday, July 17, 2023. I am Dave Biddle flying solo on today's show. First and

0:35.4

foremost, condolences, prayers to Carnell Tate and his family. For those that

0:40.8

haven't heard, I'm sure most of you if not all have heard by now that his

0:44.4

mother passed away. She was murdered in a drive-by shooting, just unbelievable for a

0:51.2

young man to have to deal with that. Such a good young man too. We know Carnell

0:54.7

Tate showed out in the spring on the field, not just in the spring game, but

0:58.3

throughout spring in practice, but got a chance to be at a couple of events with

1:02.6

this young man through Brian Shottonstein and Cardell Jones' foundation and

1:08.4

Maturby on his years. Looks like she's right in the eye. At one of the events, Dan

1:14.2

Rubin and Lee Shear, Mr. Bucknuts looked at each other like, wow, that kid is

1:18.0

impressive. He's impressive, like off the field. So just prayers to Carnell Tate,

1:25.2

man. I don't know how you can, that's got to be so tough. It's unspeakable for an

1:29.7

18-year-old to have to go through that. I'm already away from home and I was mom.

1:32.5

It's, you know, shot in a drive-by. It's just, it's awful. It's awful. So, wanted to say

1:40.0

something, you know, the crux of the show we're going to talk about the defense,

1:44.5

but I wanted to say something about Carnell Tate because Bucknutian, you need to

1:48.5

reach out, maybe not reach out, but I don't know. Say a prayer, do whatever you

1:52.8

think you want to do to help out this young man because he needs it right now.

1:56.0

There's no doubt about it. He's going through very tough times. All right, so we're

1:59.9

going to talk about the defense on today's show. It's interesting because you look

2:04.8

at the stats. It's like, wow, they improved exponentially, defensively last year,
