Well, howdy there internet people, let's bow again.

So today we are going to talk about symbols and flags and how sometimes the symbol changes over time and what context is more important in certain situations.

We're going to do this because I got a message from somebody and short version. They're in the

Navy. They're a senior NTO and they're black.

And they have always looked at the Don't Tread On Me flag because of the Navy's

association with it as like cool, like this is a good thing.

This is something that they are proud to associate with themselves.

And the question is basically, you know, how did the symbol, even though the one in question is a little bit different than the one that this person

is happy to associate themselves with, how did it change so much?

It's common. Symbols change over time all the time. All the time.

A good example of this is that when I was growing, it was like super common for kids to have a bandanna at school.

Generally a red one or a blue one. While I was growing up, that changed.

Couldn't do that anymore. Which was weird because, I mean, as you might be able to guess,

that wasn't actually an issue at you know where I grew up

but

The use as a symbol altered whether or not it was acceptable in a certain location.

Another good example of that is the literalized, can't use that example. I mean,

hmm. Okay, during Band of Brothers,

there was a lieutenant, during a movie band of brothers,

there was a lieutenant who handed something out to

a bunch of German POWs and then something happened.
