So today, we're going to talk about the incredible shrinking GOP majority and what it means for Trump's first 100 days.

Political commentators are trying to square the idea that Trump has a mandate when he also has a

House majority after a November election

that they're saying is the smallest since Hoover. It's a hard concept to square. If everything

holds and the current projections on results are correct, Republicans are likely to have a

220 to 215 majority in the House.

To start with, then it drops.

With resignations related to Trump's nominations,

the majority will drop to 217 to 215.

That means one Republican defection on a vote is enough to stop it.

Assuming the Democratic Party holds the line, which is only a halfway safe assumption.

Given the controversial nature of some of Trump's policies, Republicans in vulnerable districts

may not go along with all of them, despite the post-election bliss or post-election blues, depending on which side you're on.

The election wasn't quite as decisive as some are making it. Now, once the special elections happen,

and those seats that opened up by the nomination process are filled. Republicans will probably get at least a couple

of those seats back. But that takes time. Incoming presidential administrations are typically

judged by their first 100 days. It definitely sets the tone. With a slim house majority,

it's going to be hard for Trump to pass

any major legislation. He'll still use executive orders like they're going out of style,

but the deeper changes are going to be very, very difficult. Everybody on the liberal side of the aisle

knows what happens with narrow majorities like this.
