Well, howdy there, Internet people, it's Bell again. So today, we're going to talk about the

GOP, AI, and states. The Republican Party is moving to stop states and local governments

from regulating artificial intelligence in any meaningful way. Buried in the GOP budget reconciliation plan is a bit that stops states or local governments

from enforcing laws or regulations that restrict AI models, AI systems or automated decision systems,

facial recognition systems, and so on for 10 years. Yes, automated

decision systems, like the kind that have been in the headlines for being wrong. Makes you feel

good, right? And yes, I do mean laws that restrict AI. This isn't a case where the federal government wants to make sure it

has control over the legislative growth of something. States and local governments cannot quote

impose any substantive design, performance, data handling, documentation, civil liability, taxation, fee, or other requirement.

But they are totally free to help AI and, quote, facilitate the deployment or operation.

It would also allow laws that, quote, streamline licensing, permitting, routing, zoning,

procurement, or reporting procedures.

Laws that help AI are okay.

Laws that restrict them aren't.

So much for Republicans believing in states' rights, huh?

How's that make you feel, ladies?

Republicans in D.C. going out of their way to say they can't help you because of states' rights,

but jumping in to protect artificial intelligence.

Lee Hepner, Senior Legal Counsel at the American Economic Liberties Project, said, quote,

this bill is a sweeping and reckless attempt to shield some of the largest and most powerful

corporations in the world, from big tech monopolies to Real Page, United Health Group, and others, from any sort of accountability.
