Summary

The great Lenten readings for Cycle A move in a kind of crescendo from thirst, to blindness, to death—all metaphors for spiritual dysfunction. This Sunday’s Gospel deals with death through the story of Lazarus who, after four days in his tomb, represents someone who is totally sunk in sin, totally dead spiritually. The voice of Jesus calls Lazarus, and all of us, back to life—no matter what we've done, and no matter how dead we are.

Lenton readings for Cycle A of Lent and there's some of the best gospel

0:46.6

readings we have in the whole liturgical year and these readings move in a

0:50.2

kind of crescendo as Lent is moving toward Easter. So two weeks ago we had a

0:55.9

story of the woman at the well where Jesus presented himself as water for a

1:00.3

thirsty soul and in last week we had the story of the man born blind when Jesus

1:06.1

presented himself as light for blind eyes. Now finally today we have this great

1:13.9

story of the raising of Lazarus where in Jesus presents himself as resurrection

1:20.7

and life for someone who has died. So thirst, blindness, death are all metaphors

1:28.7

for the spiritual dysfunction and we all find ourselves in. We're thirsty and

1:34.0

nothing in the world satisfies us. We're blind but no simply worldly pattern

1:38.8

allows us to see. We're dead and we can't bring ourselves back to life. In fact

1:45.6

we drink from saltwater that makes us thirstier. In trying to see we make

1:51.4

ourselves even blinder. One thing a dead person can't do is bring himself to

1:56.6

life. I think especially in the context of our culture this acknowledgement of
