Last week, Southwest Airlines canceled close to 9,000 flights, sending the airline industry into a frenzy. If you ask them what happened, they will tell you it was a network "meltdown," but was it?
Today, I want to explore some of the deep-rooted causes for Southwest's failure. These are not unique to Southwest; they are industry problems rooted in...wait for it...a warped sense of capitalism.

0:00.0 | Well, what's up my friends? This is the Jason Stapleton program, the entrepreneurial podcast that breaks down the skills you need to start and grow a business that creates more wealth and freedom for you. |
0:11.0 | That sounds like your jam. Let's get started. |
0:16.0 | Oh, happy Monday to you. It's 2023, whether you lack it or not, January 2nd. I'm doing a sober January, which I, somebody was like, well, I don't drink, so that wouldn't be much of a challenge for me. |
0:29.0 | That's probably not the way he said it, but when I read it on the network, that's the way I interpreted it. And I was like, look, sober January is really just about kind of like you've got basically two solid months of just indulgence. |
0:43.0 | And you're saying, hey, I come January, I kind of want to reset. I want to do some things different. So for you, your sober January, maybe I'm going to eat any sugar or I'm not going to have the complex carbs. I'm going to stick with the salads and the lean meats and stuff like that. |
0:56.0 | For me, what we decided was I'm not, I'm still drinking coffee. There's no way I'm giving it up. I'll die first. But I'm going to give up the alcohol for a month. I'm going to give up the complex carbohydrates. And I'm going to try as best I can to limit the sugar. |
1:11.0 | Like, there's some things that they put sugar in stuff. And I'm definitely not going to be overboard so much that I'm actually looking at all the packaging. Oh, this has sugar in it. I'm not going to eat that. |
1:21.0 | But I'm going to try and stick with the whole, the whole vegetables, the, you know, the whole grains, the lean meats, all that stuff for the next 30 days. And we're going to see where we're at. |
1:30.0 | And if you want to join me on that challenge, you can just go to the network, link in the description. And all I did was I went into the, we have different groups inside there. I went to the health and fitness group. |
1:39.0 | And I just posted my weight and my waistline, which is a little scary at this point. But I got a whole month to kind of get back in gear, got an exercise program and regiment going. |
1:50.0 | And I think that's important. It's important in business. Last month, we did this with our, with our entrepreneurial group and it basically went through the first quarter, the first, the first 90 days of 2023 and said, hey, what do we want to get accomplished? |
2:04.0 | We set some clear goals, some clear benchmarks of what we need to achieve over the next 90 days. And then I showed you guys how to put that in and how to distribute that to your team. |
2:14.0 | And I'm very excited that we've got a lot of stuff coming this year. This podcast is going to be a huge part of it. You guys are always a huge part of it with the network. |
2:22.0 | And with the goal of making this a great year. And in the pre show, when I was talking to the guys on the network, one of the things that I said was, you, you have a choice on how you want to look at this year. |
2:34.0 | You can look at this year and say, oh, we've got, we've got recession on the horizon. And no, this is a terrible time to do anything. The best thing to do is sit and wait. |
2:44.0 | Or you can look at it and say, this is going to be the best time on earth. There's never going to be a better time for me to start whatever it is I want to do to start changing my life. |
2:53.0 | And I've always, when I think about this, I always, I've always thought about it the same way. It's this idea that the future is unknown. |
3:02.0 | It's unknown by any of us. Now, if you talk to all the experts and you take a look at the economy right now, certainly it would signal some very tough times on the horizon. |
3:12.0 | But do they get here this year? Do they get there this quarter? Or does it delay? There are plenty of times I thought that everything was going to come apart. |
3:21.0 | And it took six months, a year, two years for it to happen. Remember 2018, we started talking about the next great recession. |
3:28.0 | And I said, I don't know when it's going to come. I have no idea. But I know based on what I'm seeing in the economy that this is not going to last forever. |
3:38.0 | It lasted two years, two years until COVID hit. And now we've got all kinds of other problems with inflation and everybody's looking around going, oh, man, things are going to fall apart. Are they? I don't know. |
