In the bustling streets of New York City, amidst the roaring symphony of the 1940s, a young boy, barely 18, with only a year and a half of formal education, stepped into the role that he seemed destined for, the humble position of a dishwasher.

With each soapy plate and greasy pan, he earned not just his meals, which were a French

benefit of working in a restaurant, but a deeper hunger for something greater, something more
