The Mercury News did some terrific coverage of the Gatrue arrest and court proceedings.

His arraignment was a big deal, attended by many of those who had been impacted by the long, cold case.

This included Diane and Craig Perlov, Leslie's siblings.

Diane, in particular, had been the one to push the case forward, often in contact with law enforcement.

She kept pushing over the years, contacting and then befriending the investigators assigned

to her sister's case.

She even had visited initial investigator Howard Desart on his deathbed, who said he was

sorry he hadn't solved the case.

Diane never gave up, and the court was pleased to give her the opportunity to address the

court. She said, quote, the one call I will never forget was the call last Tuesday. It was Sheriff's

Detective Sergeant Noe Cortez who simply said, Diane, we got him. I was stunned. I still am. I am

grateful to the dedicated heroes of law enforcement.

I am relieved that this person will not hurt any other women and that perhaps there will be justice.

But mainly, I still miss my sister, end quote.

Diane told the court that the loss of her and Craig's sister so impacted the family that her son named his daughter, Diane's granddaughter after Leslie, whom he never met.

The family went to extraordinary lengths to keep her memory alive. Unfortunately, Florence had not been able to hold out until Leslie's killer was named. She had died four years earlier.

Then Diane addressed the murder weapon, the scarf. Diane was tortured by the knowledge that the scarf

that had been used to strangle the life out of her beloved sister was hers. She said, quote,

I cannot walk alone in the woods. I will not walk to my car at night with a scarf around my neck.

These things have become second nature to me, as they are with many women in this country.

Then she addressed the shriveled scowling man in the wheelchair who refused to look at her.
