The 14-year-old was stuffed into the drainpipe head first.

He was supposed to fit. Unfortunately, he didn't. His feet were still sticking out.

Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb pushed furiously until success.

The water flowing through the pipe would decompose the body, and with no evidence remaining, they'd get away with murder.

On the way back to their car, Richard carried his partner in crime shoes and jacket up the embankment.

Then he stopped. He swore he heard something fall to the ground.

Richard checked for his wallet and keys. He had him.

He asked Nathan if he'd heard the noise or had dropped anything. Nathan said he hadn't.

Richard pulled out his flashlight to triple-check. He saw nothing unusual.

It must have been a tree branch or something.

The minor noise was forgotten. Their mission was complete.

It was time for the jubilant drive back to Chicago.

Richard opened some gin to celebrate. Everything had gone according to plan.

They were not only geniuses, but quite possibly the two best criminal minds in America.

If Nathan Leopold had had perfect vision, that might have been the case.

Little did they know that a pair of tortoise shell eyeglasses with unusual hinges would seal their fates.
