Sara quickly saw a need for a direct to consumer, farm-to-table, business model that bridged a necessary consumer conversation gap for farm-to-table products. Palouse Brand was created out of this need and conversation, and since has been able to reach consumers across the United States with fresh family farmed non-GMO grains and legumes. Sara also wanted to run her company differently and sought to create an alternative, flexible work environment for women in our rural communities, that provides time and space for both family and work.  This platform has transpired into a predominantly female led company, with women running both the behind the scenes work as well as the packaging line. A long time ago, I tried to grow lentils. I think it was about three years ago. I did okay. I didn't do

0:18.0

great. I got enough lentils to maybe fill a spoon or a quarter cup measure. It wasn't that good,

0:25.5

Sarah. So I'm glad you're here on the show. Sarah made her from a loose brand fifth generation

farm. We're talking lentils today at a farming level. So I would love to just go back to

0:37.6

how it starts. How do I start farming lentils if I wanted to?

0:41.6

Yeah, so that's a great question. I think that lentils can definitely be used a few different

0:46.3

ways and especially in your bed. So let's talk about one of the coolest things about a lentil plant

0:52.1

is the nitrogen that it provides the soil. When you farm your lentils or when you grew your lentils,

1:00.0

Kevin, did you pull the roots out and look at them? Yeah. And did you see the nitrogen nodules

1:06.0

based on those roots, growing on those roots? Sure it did. Yeah. So one of the best things that

1:12.0

those lentils are going to do is take gases from the air and put it into grow the nitrogen nodules.

1:21.2

And so they're actually probably easier to plant in seed or sprout. Some people are sprouting

1:29.4

for chicken food or whatever. But they're pretty easy to do it at home. So you want me to talk

1:38.1

about how we do it on our farm and then how you can do it at home without the help? I would love to.

1:43.2

Yeah, I know. I know we're going to talk about it at the home gardener level later on in the week.

1:48.4

So I'd kind of like to focus on just like how you guys do it. Yeah, totally. So we plant our lentils

1:54.4

typically in April. Now that is whether dependent as I, you know, because we are a dry land farm

2:00.5

depends on rain and when that season's coming. But we seed them in the ground. We are a no-till farm.

2:07.3

So we direct seed those. They go about an inch, inch and a half into the ground once the soil starts

2:12.8

getting warm. From there, then they grow. They're actually pretty easy to grow. They have a

2:19.3

super high sprout rate. So our pardino lentils sprout at about 97% even at home if you do it the

2:28.3

right way. So they're not that they're kind of they're like a drought tolerant easier to grow
