Summary

Don sits down with political strategist  @mike_nellis  to unpack the Democrats’ sweeping victories across the country... how it happened, what fueled the momentum, and what it means for the road ahead. From massive voter turnout to shifting suburban districts, this election was a clear rejection of MAGA politics. But as Don and Mike warn, Democrats can’t get comfortable. Victories are earned, and keeping this momentum alive through 2026 will take strategy, focus, and hard work. A smart, insightful look at what went right and how to make sure it keeps going right. 0:52.2

Yeah.

And he's very happy. Should Democrats be happy? Yes and no. I think it's hard to find good news for the Republicans, so I think Democrats should be happy to get the stink of last year's election off of us, prove that we can win again. I think Democrats should be careful, though, to not act like we're back or that we're popular or that we figured things out yet, because I don't think we've had that. I think we've still got a lot of work to do.

And we ran some really great candidates. Zoran is a great candidate for New York City. Abigail Spanberg, he did a great job. Mikey Scheld did a great job. All these candidates up and down the ballot. We've got to do that again next year. but we've got a lot of things we've got to fix in the Democratic Party from our messengers to our messaging, to the policies, to how we get shit done.

And I don't think Democrats should forget that we still have a lot of work to do. we got a fix in the Democratic Party from our messengers to our messaging, to the policies,

to how we get shit done. And I don't think Democrats should forget that we still have a lot of work to do. Oh, wow. So that's a reality check. You know, I just wrote a substack article saying,

1:37.0

you know, New York City woke up different this morning, but I said, you know, the, I think it was, how did I say it, that the campaign is the sermon,

1:50.7

and now it's time for the scripture, right? Now it's time to put everything into play, right?

1:56.0

Because the scripture is where the rubber meets the road. The sermon is just like someone

preaching and saying, you can do this, you can do that.

2:01.7

And as much as I think Mandani was a good choice for New York City,

2:07.3

try his policy, see if it works.

2:09.9

He's for the people.

2:12.5

You know, he's probably going to face some headwinds.

And people are going to, look, people are going to come and say, where's my low rent, right? Where are my free buses? Where am I, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Am I wrong to say that? No, I think, look, people gravitated to Zoran for a bunch of different reasons. One, he's a very charismatic guy. I saw somebody talk last night how he built an anti-lonliness campaign that gave young people in particular somewhere to gravitate to during a particular dark time. I think on the policy solutions, this stuff like the, you know, the government-run grocery stores or the free buses. My answer to this to anybody who doesn't like them is, what's your plan? Because Zoramandani is trying to solve problems that people are experiencing right now from being unable to find a house to being unable to find grocery stores, to being unable to put food on a table. And he's got some new ideas. Maybe they work, maybe they won't. There's some that I don't agree with on paper. But give them a shot. Like, I think it's okay to try some new shit. And like the establishment in both political parties is not delivering new solutions that are going to help people. So of course they're going to gravitate to a DSA candidate or a Donald Trump or something like that. The more that you run shitty establishment candidates that don't deliver, the more people are going to gravitate towards things outside the mainstream. Yeah. Look, I think that Golden Dawn, who's in the

chats, articulated it better than I did. The GOP will make it difficult for us to vote next year for

3:30.1

sure. That's part of it, but she said, we cannot take last night for granted, which is a part I was

3:34.4

really, you have to build on that. And so as great as this win was for Zoran Mandani, I hope that he,
