Summary

Leicester is one of the most diverse cities in England – often presented as a shining example multi-cultural Britain. But tensions between some factions have been brewing in the city for months and boiled over recently when there were violent clashes which led to dozens of arrests. For decades, the city of Leicester in the east of England has had a reputation for being a model of cohesion.

Trouble began when 300 Hindu men, most of them marched through a predominantly Muslim area, leading to serious disorder.

The next day, Muslim men, joined by supporters from outside of the area, staged a counter protest, which also turned violent.

The disturbances made headlines around the world, not just in India, but in the US, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

The Hindus have been attacked by Islamist goons who have been attacked by Muslims.

Video shows hundreds surrounding that temple, chanting religious slogans, making up some people believe that the fighting was about a cricket match.

But tensions in the city have been rising for months, only gaining widespread publicity when they reached boiling point.

So how does a South Asian community widely held up as an example of successful integration, find itself so divided?

To answer that question, I've spent several days here in Lester trying to discover what's happened by listening to people from all sides.

As you can imagine, what I found out is that this isn't straightforward, far from it.

It's not about what happened after a game of cricket.

It's not even about Muslims against Hindus or Hindus against Muslims. It's much more nuanced than that.

But to really understand why these divisions have happened, we need to go back nearly 50 years, when South Asian migration really took off here in the late 60s and early 70s.

For decades, Lester's South Asian community has been predominantly made up of Hindus and Muslims, who arrived from the state of Gujarat in India, often via East Africa, where they'd settled after finding work.
