As a boy, he studied the histories with such hunger that his parents often found him asleep,

with one cheek pressed upon the cover of a dusty tome stolen from the palace library.

Bound volumes with names like Elkin Kings of the Plains Age.

Early workings of silk and iron in the empire.

Flight in motion and practice.

There were too many to name, but never enough to read. His eyes burned and crackled by night's end, words and images of times ago, washing over him like thick waves of worry,

dazzling his mind. He taught himself to read the old language at an astonishing age,

and even his tutors were alarmed by his appetite for the deeds of past eras,

the glory of the past and the thrill of bringing it to life.

He was a noble from the flightless class, but from a family of no significance.

It allowed him to avoid much expectation, which for him was fine.

He would find out later that his parents were radicals of a different sort that moved in rebellious circles,

circles that worked for an end to the cruelty of the caste system.

A practice they felt kept their people from true enlightenment.
