Julian and Marguerite were close for a brother and sister. One might say too close.

0:18.0

As children, they were inseparable. At first, their parents didn't think anything of it,

0:22.6

but as the years passed by, the siblings' bond only grew more intimate. Eventually, their family

0:27.6

began to worry. No one could quite put their finger on it, but something about the way that

0:32.4

Julian and Marguerite interacted with one another seemed unnatural. In an effort to separate them, Julian was shipped off to school.

0:41.0

Then, at only 14 years old, Marguerite was married to a 32-year-old nobleman.

0:46.5

Unfortunately, Marguerite's new husband soon began to abuse her.

0:50.5

After just two years of marriage, she fled from her husband's estate, returning home

1:18.4

and yes, their lifestyle included all of the aspects of a standard marriage. It seems they

were happy together, but it couldn't last. In 1603, Julian and Marguerite were caught and tried for adultery and incest, both of which

1:33.5

were punishable by death at the time.

1:36.1

The siblings were convicted, and in December of that same year, they were beheaded.

1:41.9

Today you can still find their grave in Paris. Their tomb reads,

1:45.4

Here lie the brother and sister. You who pass by do not inquire as to the cause of their death,

1:52.0

but go and pray to God for their souls. Folklore often sends us a message, usually wrapped up

1:58.7

in drama or wonder, or the downright chilling, and if

2:02.5

the tale of Julianne and Marguerite tell us anything, it's that taboos are off limits for a reason.

2:09.1

More often than not, something dark lies in wait for those who cross the line.
