It sounds like a weird plan.

If you're looking to take your wellness journey to the next level, consider bathing in a vat of wine.

0:20.0

From Japan to Argentina, spas have started to add pools filled

0:23.9

with red wine. Of course, it's fairly watered down, and there are a few other ingredients thrown in,

0:29.8

but the optics are still pretty fun. Like I said, it sounds a bit odd, but the concept has been

0:35.7

around a lot longer than you'd think. In fact, bathing in wine was common back in the ancient world, but for them, it was less about

0:43.3

health and more about indulgence.

The most infamous example comes from China's Shang dynasty during the reign of Emperor Zhou.

He had started out as a decent ruler, but had slowly fallen into corruption

0:56.1

and greed. And most of Zhou's own court historians lay the blame for this change at the feet of

1:01.6

the emperor's favorite consort, Daji. Apparently, Daji's hunger for opulence knew no bounds. So,

1:08.6

one day, she told Jo to build her a lake filled with wine,

1:12.9

and he was so completely bewitched by her beauty that he did exactly what she asked.

1:17.9

The pool was large enough to fit multiple canoes,

1:20.9

and featured a small island in the middle covered in trees made of skewers of meat.

1:27.1

They called it creatively the lake of wine and

1:30.3

forest of meat. The emperor, his lover, and all their friends would float around in their

1:35.3

canoes, stuffing their faces, and getting tipsy. The parties there were legendary. According to

1:41.4

one chronicler, Zhou once invited over 3,000 guests and told them to

1:46.1

chase each other in the nude. When one of his concubines protested, he had her executed. And naturally,

1:53.4

this legend is pretty hard to verify. Back in 1999, archaeologists thought they had uncovered

1:59.0

the lake of wine, but they weren't absolutely certain.
