For thousands of years, sailors have braved those dangerous waters in search of the new,

new lands, new creatures, and new civilizations.

It's almost a primal urge to go and see, to learn, to discover, and as we've done that,

we've improved our methods.

One of the biggest reasons for that was safety.

Along with being mysterious, the ocean is also deadly, which made it important for those

vessels to keep their lives on board safe from harm, and for the most part, it worked.

Not all ships survive their journey.

And while, yes, advances in technology have lessened those losses over time, the pages
