Scott Cleveland is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Catholic Studies at the University of Mary (Bismarck, ND). His research interests are in ethics, moral psychology, and philosophy of religion. He is especially interested in the study of the virtues and emotions, the relation between the two, and the role of each in the moral and intellectual life. His work has appeared in journals such as American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly, Res Philosophica, Religious Studies, Oxford Bibliographies Online, and the Proceedings of the American Catholic Philosophical Association. He co-edited with Adam Pelser Faith and Virtue Formation: Christian Philosophy in Aid of Becoming Good with Oxford University Press.

All right. So my talk is titled, Leaving Loneliness, Building Friendship, and Fostering Human Flourishing.

I'll discuss how pursuing a meaningful vision of human flourishing and building good friendships

The talk will focus on friendship, what it is, its benefits, impediments to it that take the form of vices,

and the virtue that most aids the building of friendship

and the building of bridges in a community. Dr. Robert Waldinger is the director of the Harvard

study of adult development, which followed men from their teenage years at Harvard into their 90s.

It's still underway and is one of the longest studies of its kind.

In summarizing the results, as reported by the Harvard Gazette,

Waldinger said this, loneliness kills.
