Earlier this month, it was

earlier this month it was announced that a pilot program created through a partnership between Subaru,

the National Parks Conservation Association, and the National Park Foundation,

has resulted in an absolutely astounding reduction in waste at three of America's most famous national parks.

Since 2015, the program has saved 16 million pounds of waste from landfills at Denali, Yosemite, and Grand Teton National Parks.

Last year alone, through increased recycling and

this composting efforts the pilot parks cut their landfill waste by nearly half.

I'm Jason Epperson and this week on America's national parks we explore the human impact of park visitation and what leave no trace actually means including what to do when nature calls out on the trail.

We've spent the last three weeks in Yellowstone,

and even in a year like this where crowds are fairly light, the human impact on our parks is undeniably

present at every turn. Yellowstone alone is bigger than our two smallest states combined

and requires a massive infrastructure to manage.

These places aren't just wild lands that are left alone, as much as we'd like them to be.

When visiting a national park or any public lands it's so important to practice

leave no trace principles so that national treasures remain pristine for generations to come.
