Today, of course, is a day when we mark those who have died in service to this country's military.

And honestly, as a lot of folks get the day off, Memorial Day can be kind of a microcosm of this country's relationship with the armed forces.

Everyone reaps the benefits of their service without necessarily having to think about this extraordinary toll paid by these men and women, their families.

For the people closest to those service members though, that price is real, the loss is gaping.

This way is somebody's son. We're not.

And now yours.

And what's remarkable about these losses is that while they happen during some of America's most notable conflicts,

battles that have been cataloged and documented again and again,

some of these families have never actually been told what happened to their loved ones.

We don't want to leave this world with this loosen. We want to resolve.

He understood, I believe, within the someday he would come home.

We've never known for sure what happened. We assumed that Uncle Billy was killed, but we never knew for sure.

These are people who were never marked KIA, killed in action.

In military parlance, if a service member's remains have not been identified, there's still missing an action. They're MIA.
