Welcome to the beat. The headline making unusual news tonight, really making waves, is this.

0:05.6

Law enforcement preparing for a possible Trump indictment. Agencies looking at this, several

0:12.0

taking steps in case an indictment comes down. Now, who's involved? Well, it shows that authorities

0:17.8

are eyeing this possibility, and it's in New York rather than, say, Georgia.

0:23.8

The agencies include people and police that protect the New York court buildings, the NYPD,

0:31.5

and then this. Look at this. Most interestingly, the U.S. Secret Service is involved in these preparations.

0:37.5

They, of course, protect former presidents, no matter what's happening, including if there's

0:40.7

an arrest, a booking, a charge.

0:43.4

So they're discussing these plans.

The U.S. government is preparing for the possibility of the first ever indictment of a former president.

1:14.4

A step that wasn't even taken after the accusations that removed Richard Nixon from office.

1:19.4

He was saved by a controversial pardon.

1:22.5

1:26.5

including the Secret Service, have some inside track or scoop or leak about what will happen. It looks much more like,

1:34.0

well, this is just on the table. And here's the thing. Unlike other countries, the U.S. doesn't

1:42.5

have experience with the prospect of trying a former leader. The U.S. doesn't have experience with the prospect of trying a former leader. The U.S.

1:46.1

doesn't have that experience in government, which may be why some prosecutors have blinked.

1:51.1

That's something we've discussed. But the U.S. public doesn't have this experience either.

1:56.3

The practice of holding a trial and peacefully respecting its outcome.

2:04.9

Now, we've seen other countries of Peru and Germany face down these problems, and while no example may be perfect, they have that experience.
