Hey, I'm Jeffrey Masters, and I think it is easy to forget just how different things were in 2013 when Orange is a New Black first premiered.

At that time, representation for trans people on TV and film, it was almost non-existent, right?

And with just a few exceptions, the representation most often featured non-trans actors in the trans roles.

Then came Orange is the New Black, the show that introduced Laverne Cox to the world, and in the

process, it made her one of the most recognizable trans people, maybe ever.

Now, almost exactly 10 years ago this month, Laverne also became the first openly trans person

to be featured on the cover of Time magazine.

When I spoke to Laverna a couple of years ago, we spoke about that moment, what a game

changer was in its impact, including the backlashy face from the community,

and in honor of that 10-year anniversary, I wanted to share our conversation here.
