Frankenstein's monster has had a long and storied career

in books, in films, in graphic novels, in television.

Frankly, everywhere stories are told.

It all began in 1816, when an 18-year-old woman began writing the book

that was to become Frankenstein, the modern Prometheus.

Mary Wellstonecraft, her future husband Percy Shelley

and Lord Byron were sharing a house near Geneva

when they decided to have a little contest

to see who could write the best horror story.

And thus was born what might well have been the first science fiction novel

and certainly an absolute classic tale of terror

that has proven influential for three centuries

and is still going strong.
