I think we have a long way to go,

but there are green shoots

and the Latino community specifically has a lot of energy

and community building that will pay dividends in the long run.

From future media and PRX it's Latino USA, I'm Maria No Hosa. Today a number of Latinos and Latinos and

folks from Latin America have been nominated for Oscars. So what does this all mean

about the state of Hollywood and Latino storytelling? In a few days, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will hold its 96 Oscars ceremony.

It's a new opportunity for many in the movie-making business to be recognized for excellence in cinema.

And yet another year in which unfortunately representation from Latinos and Latinos, Latinas,

Latinae and Latinos on the big screen has remained somewhat

stagnant. Just 5.5% of speaking characters in Hollywood movies are Latino or Latina.

This despite the fact that Latinos make up 19% of the US population

and have a buying power of 3.4 trillion dollars and Latinos buy lots and lots of movie tickets.
