Okay, so like, I used to play any open mic night, because that was like one opportunity.

You know what I mean?

When, like, you're starting out, I did one in North Hollywood.

Everybody there were the people that came with me in my car, which was my boyfriend and my friend, and then the venue owner.

And then this one manager I had somehow coaxed out to come check me out,

because, you know, I was still very young and idealistic at the time about my skill level.

And it was just humiliating.

Latifah Phillips is a songwriter, a musician, and a record producer.

Her projects include the autumn film, the one you're hearing now, Motospira,

and Page CXVI, a band that writes new and innovative arrangements of hymns for the church.

And then the manager sat me down, and I'm so thankful he was honest with me, but he just basically said, you have an interesting voice, but it's undeveloped,

and it's not good enough yet. So he was like, you should go take some voice lessons. And he passed me the name of a vocal teacher that I actually studied with for six months. So, but at that show,

I felt so defeated. I was like, nobody was here, and it turns out I suck. Like, oh no.
