Hi everyone. I'm Sarah Jenks-daily, supervising producer at Late Night, and welcome to our spring semester episode of Late Night Lit. On this episode, we speak with Sarah Hoover, whose debut memoir, The Motherload, episodes from the brink of motherhood, is available now and will be published in paperback on April 21st.

And lastly, we're joined by Kazi David, who took a few minutes to answer some questions with me backstage after her interview with Seth in March.

Sarah Hoover's memoir, The Motherload, episodes from the brink of motherhood, is heartbreaking, deeply honest, and details her experience with postpartum depression after the birth of her son.

It also examines her relationships with her husband, her own mother, and her path towards

finding her way out of the darkness. We talk about her writing process, her decision to share

some of her most terrifying moments with the world, reckoning with grief and depression, and her

pact with herself, to be unflinchingly honest when recounting her experiences with pregnancy

and motherhood. Now here's my conversation with Sarah Hoover. Sarah, welcome to Late Night Lit. Thanks so

much for being here. Thanks for having me. I'm so psyched. The Sarah's together.

I know. We did it. Powerful. Yeah, we did it. So I wanted to start, I want to say, I was just so impressed by how vulnerable and honest you were because this isn't something we always see in this world we're living in today. when you were writing this, did you pretend that nobody would ever read it? Like, because this isn't a

fictional story, it's yours. So once it's out into the world, I'd imagine there's this thought of people

who are responding or not responding to a story, but they're responding to you personally. So I was

just wondering how you navigated that while writing. You know, I had spent the majority of my life feeling many levels of shame

and embarrassment about who I am. And something that I learned through the process of having this

postpartum depression and terrible psychological episode was I thought had really not gotten me

anywhere. It hadn't let me thrive as a woman.
