Nana Kwame Ajebrenia burst onto the literary scene a few years ago with his debut short story

collection Friday Black. His debut novel is entitled Chain Gang All Stars, and it's set in a world

where prisoners become gladiators, participating in televised fights to the death before rabid viewing

audiences of millions. We're joined today by Nana to discuss the research and reading he did

into our nation's carceral system, the dystopian future where he set the story, and where he was when

he found out that Chain Gang All Stars was a read with Jenna Pick. Now here's my conversation with Nana
