Summary

Latanoprost is a prostaglandin F2 analog that can help reduce intraocular pressure and manage glaucoma.

Excessive eyelash growth is a potential adverse effect of latanoprost, although some patients may appreciate this.

Patients with a lighter color iris may notice that their eyes are turning more brown with the chronic use of latanoprost.

Corticosteroids are known to increase intraocular pressure and potentially oppose the beneficial effects of latanoprost.

Hey all, welcome back to the Real Life Pharmacology podcast. I'm your host, Eric Christensen, FarmD,

0:06.1

and thank you so much for listening and taking the time out of your day. Today I'm going to cover

0:11.5

Latanoprost, which is an eyedrop used in the management of glaucoma. The brand name of this

0:20.2

medication is xylatan. And it is definitely used very

0:25.8

frequently in clinical practice for sure. So latanoprost, the easiest way I remember the mechanism

0:32.8

of action because there's lots of eyedrops for glaucom, is to look at the ending of that generic name.

0:39.9

So the prost is indicative of a prostate glandin analog.

0:46.5

So what those prostate glandins do,

0:50.2

and particularly prostate glandin F2,

0:58.9

helps to lower intraocular pressure.

1:08.4

And it does this by basically stimulating flow or outflow of the aqueous humor within the eye.

1:15.1

Now the aqueous humor, that's simply put as just the fluid within the eye. Now the aqueous humor, that's simply, simply put, is just the fluid within the eye. And as that outflow becomes blocked, or there's other, you know, physiological effects that

1:23.5

prevent movement of that fluid, that pressure can build up,

1:29.5

and ultimately that pressure can lead to damage in the eye,

1:33.8

which is obviously a resultant factor and flows into causing glaucoma

1:40.7

if we're causing that damage.

1:43.5

So by giving that prostate gland an analog, that's going to help kick that fluid out of the eye,

1:51.5

help that flow, and ultimately help lower pressure.

1:56.0

So that's the goal of the medication there.

1:59.3

Now there are a couple of really important patient education

2:03.3

pearls that I want to discuss some mistakes that I've seen in my clinical practice without

2:09.2

a doubt. So first one is storage. Okay, so once the medication is removed from the fridge, it is okay at room temp for six weeks.
