I'm extremely hopeful about the future of the church for a number of reasons first

because we rely on God, not our own efforts. He was being asked for the unteenth

time about the health of his church. There's a lot of change happening,

there's a lot of new progress, a lot of momentum.

Momentum, but that's still heading downwards.

Lots of local churches are growing in numbers,

they're being extremely effective in their local communities.

Well, lots are, but many more aren't.

Partly the things they've always done in terms of engagement with communities, in schools and so on, but also in some of the needs that have arisen over the last few years, particularly around issues of poverty and deprivation.

Yeah, but are you a church or an arm of the welfare state?
