1:20.0 | Brothers Larry and David Rains of Kalamazoo, Michigan were born in the mid 1940s. |
1:28.0 | They grew up with two sisters, one older and one younger, and their mother and their father |
1:36.1 | father worked as a gas station attendant and their mother worked part-time. |
1:41.4 | While we wouldn't bat an eyelid at this family dynamic nowadays, in the 1950s when the boys were growing up, this was considered to be more unusual. |
1:52.0 | The boys were the middle children and they were close in age with only one year between them and because of that they grew up as each other's competition. |
2:01.0 | When the boys were 9 and 10, their father left their family to start a new life with a much younger woman in Florida. |
2:10.0 | Although their father had been abusive and brought out their competitive nature with each other, |
2:15.0 | his departure left a gap in the family. |
2:19.0 | The boys tried to reconnect with their father as teens, |
2:22.0 | but they were turned away and they gave up trying to bring their father back into their lives. |
2:27.6 | The boys continued to compete in anything and everything, each determined to be the winner over the other brother. |
2:38.0 | In high school, Larry and Danny both dated the same girl, Paula, who was on and off with both of the brothers. |
