U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter was posted on top of a building in Afghanistan when enemies launched

a grenade towards Kyle and his fellow Marine Nick Uffresio. Without hesitation, Kyle willingly and

deliberately jumped on the grenade, sacrificing his own life to save his friend. Carpenter's heart

flatlined three times while being evacuated off the battlefield.

Wounded head to toe, he lost his right eye and most of his jaw. It took three years and nearly 40

surgeries to reconstruct his body. While fighting through recovery, Kyle's spirit was never broken. For his selfless devotion

to duty and his valor on the battlefield, Kyle was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2014.
