Summary

Are Christians promised a life free from suffering? If not, how should we respond when trouble comes our way?The team considers suffering and the place of lament in the life of the Christian. Is it wrong or sinful to lament? What should one say to God when going through the valley of the shadow?Scripture has the answer! The Psalms especially are full of instruction on how to praise God in our lament, and offer hope in the “vale of tears” that life on earth can be.Settle in for a deep conversation, and take note of the place the Lord has provided for His suffering children, and the witness they bring to other members of the body. Show Notes·Todd Billings’ Interview - When You Know You’re DyingWe recommend, and are happy to give away a few copies of, J.Todd Billings’ book Rejoicing in Lament.Register for the opportunity to win one! 2:03.6

of a terrifying diagnosis or any other such types of sufferings if you'll just have enough faith.

2:09.9

And because that kind of message comes from some of the largest churches and some of the most

2:17.1

widely heard preachers on the planet,

2:19.9

there are, unsurprisingly, lots of professing Christians who are utterly dismayed and shocked

2:27.0

when they experience suffering.

2:29.0

And therefore, oftentimes are either encouraged to deny that they suffer or they end up punting the faith because

2:37.4

it didn't work for them. So we want to take some moments to talk about the role of lament,

2:44.4

the function, the place of lament in the life of believers. Carl and Amy, when the Christian encounters trouble,
